Past Academic Workshops

June 2008
The First Emergent academic workshop was a great success.  33 attendees from 17 schools across the globe!
  • U.S. Universities (USC - ICT, UNC, UCF FIEA)
  • International Universities (Ireland - University of Ulster;  Ecuador - Excuela Superior Politecnica Del Litoral)
  • Community Colleges (New River Community College, Virginia)
  • Art focused schools (Ringling College of Art and Design, Vancouver Film School)
  • Training companies (CED Solutions)
  • A Canadian high school (Anderson - Whitby, Ontario)
The summit educated participants how to effectively use Gamebryo in the classroom projects.  UMBC (programming clubs and class), USC-ICT (research projects), and UCF FIEA presented to the attendees how they have been using Gamebryo in their schools’ programs.  And what would a summit be without a little competition!

The person who could put together the best application in the final two hours of the workshop won a valuable prize!   Check back soon and we’ll reveal our proud winner!!

Testimonials from Academic Workshop Attendees

"We attended the recent Emergent Academic summit held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina which brought together educators from all over the world to participate in 3 days of workshops, tutorials and discussions. The academic summit provided educators with an excellent venue to share their experiences and discuss how Gamebryo can be used in a class room setting. Furthermore, the unfettered access to industry experts greatly helped improve our understanding of the Gamebryo and determine how best to integrate it into our teaching provision.   Emergent technologies should also be congratulated on their innovative and forward thinking approach to supporting the academic community."
-Michael Callaghan, University of Ulster

"The Academic workshop was about twice as informative as most of these sessions I've seen.  I appreciated how the days were broken up between art and programming so we could focus on one domain at a time.  I was impressed at how much detail was provided, such as going through every widget in the exporter.  The instructors were not afraid of any level of questioning, and handled those questions well.  The sessions boost my confidence in the engine and leave me feeling like it can handle whatever we choose to throw at it.
-Ron Weaver, Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, University of Central Florida

"The workshop was a good opportunity to learn more about Gamebryo and the capabilities of its new release as well as future direction."
-Eric Forbell, a computer scientist at USC's Institute for Creative Technologies, which uses Gamebryo in some of its virtual training applications.

“Having attended the Academic Workshop, I really enjoyed the lecture style and content and I truly hope this wasn't a one-time event. I wish I could have brought more staff!  I have a sincere appreciation for the example that Emergent has set with respect to its willingness to support the academic community.   I wish that every company would take such a proactive stance on making affordable tools available for higher education.”
Jim McCampbell, Ringling College of Art & Design
